Hilldale’s Farmer’s Market; Big on Fresh Veggies, Small on Crowds

This week’s farmer’s market adventure was a little different than usual.
Lindsay is out of town for work, so I decided that since she wasn’t able to join (and I’d be cooking for only one this week), that I’d take advantage of one of Madison’s smaller markets at Hilldale. My plan was to grab just a few things, so that by Wednesday I could go to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. on Wed.
The Hilldale market was fun, with smaller crowds, friendly vendors, and even a small band providing some nice shopping music. There was plenty of vendors selling vegetables, cheeses, meats, and baked goods. Most prevalent was the potted herbs, plants, and flowers. Had I not been there on bike, I might have taken home some nice looking herbs.
The only thing missing was some coffee. I was told there was a vendor who’s usually there, but had other engagements this weekend. I ended up grabbing a cup at Pasqual’s. I guess all’s well that ends caffeinated.
Hilldale’s Bounty:
- Cut sorrel from Cook with Herbs
- Orange greenhouse tomatoes and cucumbers from Don’s Produce
- Leeks, rhubarb, and garlic from County Line Plants and Produce
- Asparagus from Xay Lo’s family garden in Oregon
- Spinach from Prairie Farm Produce
- Assorted lettuce greens from an unnamed Madison garden
- Romano cheese from Farmer Johns Cheeses
- Celeriac from Kings Hill Farms (via Metcalfe’s)
- Carrots from Tipi Produce (via Metcalfe’s)
- Dry Rub from Howling Wolf (via Metcalfe’s)
